Ohio State Reformatory The Reformatory was built in 1896 in a design reminiscent of old German castles. The intent for the design was to bring solace and peace to young prisoners brought here for rehabilitation, but prison life being what it is, it was more often the scene of violence, fear, mistrust, and hatred than any peaceful pursuit. In fact, it has been suggested that the very design of the building itself traps energies and magnifies paranormal effects. As we know, it is not uncommon for deserted prisons to have reputations for being haunted because of the sheer misery and mayhem that occurs on a daily basis behind the barbed wire and barred doors. The difference in the Mansfield Reformatory is that here we can actually go in and study this phenomenon first hand with the owner's consent! Stories of paranormal encounters are abundant all over the Mansfield Reformatory, but there do appear to be some hubs of activity worth mentioning here: The Cellblock: Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest freestanding cellblock in the world, this 6-tiered bank of dank, dark, dirty cells emanates a spooky, kind of sad feeling right off the bat. These cells have seen their share of prison violence, including murder and suicide, and all forms of apparitions have been reported here, including interactive entities and residuals, with feelings of being watched, smells, sounds such as voices and footsteps, cold spots, and movements such as cell doors opening or shutting. The Basement: The basement, if not the most haunted, is by far the spookiest place in the building. Two specific spirits have been noted here, that of a young boy and of a former employee. The basement was where the solitary confinement cells were located, and was the site of a good deal of misery. There is a hostile feeling here, and most types of paranormal activity have been reported in this area, including all forms of apparitions, both interactive and residual, with smells, sounds, cold spots, and movement. The Chapel: Rumored to have been an execution chamber before being converted into a chapel, this area is another hub of paranormal activity within the prison. Electronics such as cameras fail completely or take pictures with the pixels scrambled. There is a feeling of being watched, and there are sounds, smells, cold spots, and an overall eerie feeling here, with not a shred of the quiet and peace one would normally find in a chapel setting. The Administrative Wing: The administrative wing has seen its share of death and tragedy. The warden's wife was accidentally shot to death here, and the warden himself died in this wing. The most common paranormal occurrence in this area is a noticeable smell of old-fashioned rose perfume, sometimes quite strong. There is also the occasional smell of cigar smoke, attributed to the warden. Camera malfunctions are common here, as are cold spots and strange sounds. The Infirmary: The infirmary is a large, cavernous space with a heavy, solemn atmosphere. Inmates died sometimes slow and painful deaths due to various diseases here, and the walls are almost ringing from the suffering that occurred in this area. This Infirmary runs the gamut of paranormal occurrences and many find it too uncomfortable to stay here for very long. The above is just a partial taste of what this huge complex has to offer ghost hunters at every level. Guided tours, self-guided amateur ghost hunts, and even professional-grade ghost hunting opportunities are offered here for very reasonable prices. Mansfield Reformatory is an absolute MUST for anyone interested in the paranormal who is already in the midwest, and for the rest of the country, find a reason to head to Ohio to partake in this awesome opportunity!!
