Anchorage

Eklutna Cemetery
Although this old cemetery in the Eklutna National Park certainly does not qualify as one of the most haunted places on earth, the mystical "vibe" here is unmistakable.  The native tribes in this area were subject to Russian influences long before any encroachment by white settlers from the south, and this influence is still felt today, reflected in the Russian Orthodox crosses marking most graves in the cemetery.  What is really unusual here, however, is the custom of building small wooden houses with gabled roofs over the graves to house the departed spirits.  At Eklutna Cemetery, these brightly-colored houses are lined up in regular rows, each topped with a comb-like crest.  The color and style of the crest identifies the particular tribe the deceased belongs to, and the size of the house indicates social status.  Inside the house, personal possessions of the deceased are placed, because the belief is that the spirit will be earthbound and looking for his possessions for 40 days and nights after his death.  Presumably then, the purpose for these houses is to give the deceased easy access to his belongings within the confines of the cemetery, lest he be wandering around scaring the daylights out of living tribesmen!  There are also graves marked only by crosses for non-tribesmen buried in the cemetery.  Whether or not you will encounter an entity searching for his worldly possessions when you visit this cemetery is an open question, but certainly the history, the uniqueness, and the sacred aspect of this site makes it worth a visit if you find yourself in the Anchorage area.

Directions:  From Anchorage, take Hwy 1 (Glenn Highway) north to Eklutna.  Exit at Eklutna and turn left to the park.  The trip takes 30 minutes or so.
