West Milford
Clinton Road Running in a basically north-south direction for approximately 10 miles, Clinton Road is reportedly named after a long-gone settlement named Clinton that is reputed to have been located somewhere along the road where the road crosses a brook. The road is largely desolate with few houses along its length, which adds to the spooky mystique of the area. Tales of terror involving Clinton Road include a wolf-like creature who gives chase and has been known to scratch cars in the process, a pick-up truck that will start following you with bright lights on, but then kill his lights and disappear, a bridge haunted by a little boy who throws back any coins you toss into the water (sometimes the boy appears too), stories of Satan worshipers and sacrifices, pagan worship, Ku Klux Klan activity, cannibalism, and murder victims being dumped in the vicinity. There is also the foundation of an old castle on a hill near the reservoir that can be accessed by trail, believed to be a favorite of witches and Satanists, and a pyramid-like structure that is actually a civil war furnace (it's fenced off at this point so don't trespass). Actual experiences on Clinton Road seem to vary. Some people can go the length of the road in the middle of the night without more than a creepy feeling to show for it. Others have reported being chased by animals or vehicles, seeing strangely-dressed people who do not speak, seeing unknown animals crossing the road, and hearing what sounds like chanting or spell casting coming from the woods. Almost all who go down Clinton Road report that it's just "spooky" in general, whether or not they experience any tangible paranormal activity. Take Route 23 north or south to
the town of Newfoundland and watch for the Clinton Road sign. Drive
carefully, as there is a dead man's curve on Clinton Road that is very dangerous.
