Bowers Mansion The story goes that twice divorced Eilley Cowan, a rather resourceful woman who among other things gazed into crystal balls and conducted seances, met and married a handsome young man named Sandy Bowers. Together, they owned a mine that turned out to be one of the richest in the area, and they quickly became millionaires. Sparing no expense, they built the Bowers mansion and travelled Europe to find the most elegant furnishings. Unfortunately, neither was good with money, and when Sandy died suddenly, Eilley was left with a mountain of unpaid bills. To make matters worse, her adopted daughter, Persia because gravely ill at boarding school and died before Eilley could get to her. Shortly thereafter, Eilley lost the mansion to foreclosure and became "The Famous Washoe Seeress" to keep food on the table. She was actually fairly good at prophecy, and is credited with foretelling the Virginia City Fire of 1879. Eventually, however, her health and hearing declined and she was no longer able to make a living. She died at the age of 76, a poor and broken woman. She is buried behind the mansion along with Sandy and Persia. The Bowers mansion is now owned by the Washoe County Parks Department and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Reported ghost sightings are commonplace here, and phenomenon reported are cold spots, mists, voices, and possibly even a full or half-bodied apparition. Tours of the mansion and of the grave sites are available during the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor day and on some weekends after Labor Day. There is a haunted tour around Halloween. Because of the limited tour schedule, do call before you make the trip to make sure the mansion is open for tours. This is a good one, folks! Bowers Mansion Park is located
