Reuters news reports today that a whole town in Italy is being besieged by unexplainable spontaneous fires.   The fires started in January, 2004 in the town of Canneto di Caronia, and have erupted almost daily, other than a brief respite last month.  So far, no humans have gone up in flames, but cars, electrical boxes, wiring, lamps, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and even an entire apartment have all been observed to suddenly catch fire and completely burn to ash within seconds.  The police ruled out an arsonist after they observed some wiring catching fire firsthand.  After the initial outbreak, the local power company cut the power to the town and installed a generator, but the generator spontaneously combusted too. 

Many experts are descending on the area to do testing.  One theory is that nearby train track ground wires are building up electricity and causing the problems, while others believe it is a rare natural phenomenon involving energy surging up from the core of the earth.  Others suspect the supernatural, and believe the town should be exorcised.  One thing for sure, everyone who goes in thinking there is a simple explanation has come out shaking their heads.......
